As a founding member of the Cities of Service coalition, Mayor Shirley Franklin signed the declaration in 2009 and committed to hiring a chief service officer. Mayor Kasim Reed succeeded Mayor Franklin in 2010, and has embraced impact volunteering. The city has made a real impact by launching 8 service initiatives in a number of areas, including neighborhood revitalization, youth development, and environmental sustainability.
