Milwaukee, WI

Milwaukee, WI has been a member of the Cities of Service coalition since Mayor Barrett signed the Declaration of Service in 2009 and committed to leveraging resident volunteers to achieve the city's goals. Milwaukee has engaged resident volunteers on neighborhood revitalization projects including Painting with Purpose, a program that leverages resident volunteers to create decorative board-ups for foreclosed, city-owned homes.

Neighborhood Revitalization

Painting with Purpose

Painting with Purpose creates decorative board-ups for foreclosed, city-owned homes in the Amani neighborhood of Milwaukee, which has been especially hard-hit by foreclosures. The program engages youth volunteers, enabling them to get involved in their communities and to gain valuable work experience and skills. Volunteers use simple stencils to paint windows and doors on the boards used to board up homes, giving each house a different design and decreasing the chance of break-ins. The City of Milwaukee and the Painting with Purpose team also conducted cleanups alongside the alternative board-ups, further increasing resident engagement in neighborhood revitalization.

“Milwaukee is stronger when partners team up and work together. With its investment, Cities of Service is promoting an effort that improves the appearance of neighborhoods, and, even more importantly, it engages residents in a way that builds lasting strength."
Mayor Tom Barrett
