Recruit Your Mayor

Recruit Your Mayor

Cities of Service supports mayors and city executives as they engage residents to solve problems. The Cities of Service Recruit Your Mayor Blueprint is a guide to making your city a city of service.

Cities of Service is a national nonprofit organization that supports mayors and city chief executives in their efforts to engage local communities and residents, identify challenges, and solve problems together.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg started Cities of Service in 2009. Now an independent, nonpartisan organization, we work with cities to build city-led, citizen-powered initiatives that target specific needs, achieve long-term and measurable outcomes, improve the quality of life for residents, and build stronger cities.

Required Elements

To implement this plan, it is key to have a group of city residents who would like to see your mayor join the coalition. A letter, signed by local residents, needs to go to the mayor, listing reasons why s/he should join Cities of Service. A meeting with the mayor or a key staff person must be scheduled and a copy of the Declaration of Service must be shared with the mayor.

Executing the Plan

Recruit others to join you and secure a meeting with your mayor. Make the case for your mayor to join Cities of Service and get his/her commitment by having him/her sign the Declaration of Service.

Measuring Impact

Impact is visible when your mayor joins Cities of Service. Additional success can be shown if the city creates a high-impact service plan and by the number of impact volunteering initiatives that have been launched, the number of people benefitting from impact volunteering initiatives, and the appointment of a chief service officer.
