Sean Peterson
Vice President, Government Affairs, American Express

Sean Peterson is the leader of the Government Affairs organization for New York, New Jersey and the western region of the U.S. at American Express. His responsibilities include representing the company on important public policy issues before state governments, attorneys general, and managing the government affairs operations in sixteen states. He is also responsible for strategy and outreach to key consumer and civil rights organizations. Mr. Peterson has been at American Express since 2006.

Mr. Peterson also works with business units, particularly American Express Open, to support their business priorities, and works with legislators, government officials, consumer leaders, business partners and trade associations to advance both business and policy interests of the company.

Previously, Sean managed the industry and state relations function at Freddie Mac. His priority was building relationships with state and local government officials, banking organizations, homebuilders, real estate professionals and consumer organizations.  During his time at Freddie Mac, Sean was responsible for establishing its Don’t Borrow Trouble anti-predatory lending campaign with the U.S. Conference of Mayors, and Freddie Mac’s Credit Smart financial literacy partnership with several universities and real estate trade organizations.

Prior to joining the private sector, Sean spent several years as a senior policy advisor in the United States Congress. He served as a Chief of Staff to three members of the House of Representatives, and as the Democrat’s Staff Director and Senior Counsel to the House Subcommittee on Domestic and International Monetary Policy.

Sean earned his bachelor’s degree from Howard University, and a Juris Doctorate degree from Georgetown University in Washington, DC.  Sean was born and raised in Denver, CO, spent many years living in Washington, and now calls New York City home.
