Cities of Service is expanding disaster preparedness in seven cities across the U.S. through the Prepared Together program. Made possible with generous support from the Walmart Foundation, Prepared Together cities engage citizen volunteers in initiatives that make cities more resilient and ready for disasters. Each of the selected cities receives a $25,000 grant, program consulting services, and two AmeriCorps VISTA members for one year.
Through this program, Prepared Together AmeriCorps VISTA members are embedded in city halls and serve as local preparedness ambassadors and experts in Impact Volunteering — a Cities of Service strategy that engages citizen volunteers to identify and solve public problems alongside municipal government. The AmeriCorps VISTA members increase local capacity and equip low-income communities to better prepare for, handle, and recover from disasters, including extreme weather events.
